“Real Ear Verification is the only way to verify that a hearing aid is programmed correctly for a patient’s specific hearing loss and ear anatomy,” says Dr. Lezotte. “Even though it’s deemed the best way to fit hearing aids, it’s only used by 30% of all listening practices nationwide,” she adds.

According to Dr. Laurel Horne, Au.D., an audiologist and clinical instructor at the University of Illinois College of Medicine’s Otolaryngology Department in Chicago, it’s important to take into consideration the level of hearing loss, a person’s lifestyle, and their expectations for a hearing aid.

“Some people really like the Bluetooth capabilities of the newer hearing aids that allow them to wirelessly connect to devices such as smartphones, televisions and computers or tablets,” says Dr. Horne.
